27/05/10 - Air India workers call off strike

Air India staff returned to work after a two-day strike that left tens of thousands of passengers stranded after a court declared the stoppage illegal.

An airline spokesman said a number of striking workers had been dismissed and suspended.

The strike was called in protest at an alleged gag on staff speaking about Saturday's air disaster in Mangalore. More than 100 flights were cancelled.

At least 158 people died when the Air India Express Boeing crashed.

Normal operations are expected to resume in two to three days, reports say. ukimports.org

26/05/10 - Iraqi Airways drops Europe flights in row with Kuwait

Iraqi Airways has dropped flights to London and Sweden after a row with Kuwait over war reparations.

When the airline's first jet to fly to London in more than 20 years arrived last month, Kuwait tried to have it confiscated.

The state-owned airline's chief was temporarily stranded in the UK on the basis of a UK court order.

Iraqi Transport Minister Amer Abdul-Jabbar is expected to decide on Wednesday on the airline's future. ukimports.org

25/05/10 - Oil leaks from tanker collision off Singapore

Emergency teams are working to contain a crude oil spill after two ships - a tanker and a bulk carrier - collided in waters off Singapore.

Port officials said no injuries had been reported but the Malaysian-registered tanker had ruptured one of its tanks.

An estimated 2,000 tonnes of crude oil are leaking into the sea.

The collision happened in the Strait of Singapore, one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. ukimports.org

25/05/10 - BA strike: Over 200 flights cancelled on second day

More than 200 flights in and out of Heathrow have been cancelled on the second day of strike action by British Airways cabin crew.

Nearly 200 short-haul flights and around 28 long-haul flights scheduled for Tuesday have been cancelled, departure boards suggest.

BA refused to confirm the numbers, saying that they preferred to concentrate on passenger numbers.

24/05/10 - Heathrow and Stansted runway plans scrapped by BAA

BAA has withdrawn its planning application for a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport following the election of the new government.

The airport operator's plans for a second runway at Stansted have also been pulled.

The move by BAA was a formality, since both the Conservative and Liberal Democrats had opposed new runways.

However, BAA will follow through with a pledge to buy up some homes on sites where the runways were set to be built. ukimports.org

24/05/10 - British Airways cabin crew begin five-day strike action

British Airways cabin crew have begun a five-day strike, in a resumption of industrial action in their long-running dispute over jobs and pay.

The Unite union is also demanding the restoration of travel concessions to staff who took part in the last series of stoppages in March.

The latest strike is expected to be confined to some flights in and out of Heathrow airport. ukimports.org

A man who died when a cargo cradle collapsed from a crane at a port in Essex has been identified as a 42-year-old from Denmark.

Per Terp, an engineer from Norresundby, died from chest compression at Parkeston Quay in Harwich on Friday. ukimports.org

22/05/10 - Manx-bound aircraft was diverted over burning smell

A burning smell which forced a pilot to divert his aircraft to Manchester Airport was caused by an overheating engine part, a report has said.

The Flybe aircraft was travelling to the Isle of Man on 16 December when passengers noted the "strong" smell.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report revealed that two people also saw sparks coming from an engine, prompting a Mayday call.

Emergency crews met the aircraft as it landed but no-one was injured. ukimports.org

21/05/10 - Man killed as crane cradle collapses at Harwich port

A man was killed and another seriously injured when a cradle carried by a crane collapsed at a port in Essex.

Ambulance and fire crews were called to the scene at Parkeston Quay in Harwich just before 0800 BST after reports that a crane had collapsed.

The two men were trapped in the cradle between cargo and the crane, killing one of them. The second man was flown to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.

It is thought the cargo contained turbine propellers. ukimports.org

18/05/10 - M3 motorway closed in Hampshire after lorry crash

A 10-mile stretch of motorway in Hampshire was closed for several hours after a lorry left the carriageway in the early hours of the morning.

The lorry, left the road between junctions 8 and 9 at about 0230 BST, shedding its load of paper.

Hampshire Constabulary closed one southbound lane of the motorway from 0900 BST to recover the paper. ukimports.org

17/05/10 - England's airports stay open as ash cloud clears the UK

All airports in England will remain open until at least 0100 BST on Tuesday as the volcanic ash cloud clears, air traffic control body Nats said.

Restrictions put in place over most of the country's airports were all lifted by 1300 BST on Monday.

But air passengers across England still faced disruption and delays as airports tried to clear passenger backlogs.

From midday on Tuesday new measures will allow flights for a limited time at higher ash densities. ukimports.org

17/05/10 - Ex-Halesowen Town boss admits cigarette duty fraud

A former chief executive of a football club has admitted not paying duty on £4.5m worth of counterfeit cigarettes.

Guy Simpson, who used to be in charge of Halesowen Town in the Southern League Premier Division, pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court on Monday.

The 52-year-old, of Heath Charnock, Lancashire, was charged after the Regal cigarettes were found in two cargo containers at Southampton.

17/05/10 - Ash cloud forces Heathrow and Gatwick airports to close

Britain's two busiest airports have closed as a volcanic ash cloud drifts further south, threatening major disruption to many thousands of people.

A no-fly zone imposed by the Civil Aviation Authority will see Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports shut down until 0700 BST.

Flights are also grounded in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A no-fly zone has been imposed over parts of Northern Ireland, causing renewed disruption for air travellers.

The move by the Civil Aviation Authority comes as a dense volcanic ash cloud from Iceland heads towards north-western parts of the UK.

Belfast's airports are shut until 1300 BST. Dublin Airport is open despite some Irish Republic flight bans. The Isle of Man's Ronaldsway is closed.

15/05/10 - Channel Tunnel services 'back to normal'

Eurostar is running a normal service after a carbon dioxide alert in the tunnel temporarily suspended Channel Tunnel services on Saturday.

Passengers had faced delays of up to three hours after trains in both directions were halted for more than an hour shortly after 0700 BST (0800 GMT).

12/05/10 - VAT 'will rise' under coalition government

VAT is set to rise under the new coalition government, according to a BBC survey of influential economists.

Of 29 independent economists currently used by the Treasury to assist its forecasts, 24 said they expected the rate to rise in the coming parliament.

The majority predicted a rise from the current 17.5% to 20% before the end of 2011. Analysts say a 20% rate would raise an estimated £11.5bn a year. ukimports.org

12/05/10 - Estonia 'can adopt euro' in 2011 - EU Commission

The Baltic republic of Estonia, a country of 1.3 million people, is on course to adopt the euro in January 2011, the European Commission says.

The recommendation still requires the approval of all 27 EU member states, 16 of which are in the eurozone.

The Commission assessed the potential of nine EU countries to adopt the euro, and found that "Estonia stands out... fulfilling the criteria clearly".

Plans for a third runway at London's Heathrow Airport have been scrapped by the new government.

Ash from an Icelandic volcano is drifting across areas of France, Spain, northern Italy and Germany bringing more disruption to European air travel.

Several airports were closed, including Munich in southern Germany.

Another, higher-level ash cloud is still hanging over the Atlantic, delaying flights between Europe and the US as jets divert around it.

The UK's Met Office said the ash cloud could disrupt UK airspace over the next few days.

In Italy, airports at Milan, Pisa and Florence reopened on Sunday afternoon but many flights had been delayed.

Croatia closed the airports of Split and Zadar on the Adriatic coast until further notice, Croatia Airlines said.

French authorities said ash had forced the suspension of about 20 flights at Nice airport. ukimports.org

06/05/10 - New ash restrictions in Republic

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has announced flight restrictions at six airports from 0000 BST on Friday because of a risk from volcanic ash.

The restrictions at Shannon, Donegal, Knock, Galway, Kerry and Sligo airports will be staged and will remain in place until 1300 BST on Friday.

Dublin, Cork and Waterford airports will remain open.

The IAA said the ash cloud from Iceland was encroaching on Irish airspace along the west coast of Ireland. ukimports.org

Airports across the UK have reopened after the latest closures due to volcanic ash from Iceland, air traffic controllers have said.

Flights were grounded on Wednesday night in Northern Ireland, western Scotland and England's far south-west.

But the ash cloud moved west overnight and has cleared UK airspace, air traffic control body Nats said. ukimports.org

Airports in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland are to close from 0700 BST because of risks from volcanic ash, the Civil Aviation Authority has said.

Glasgow, Prestwick and Derry are likely to be closed all day, while there are plans to shut Inverness in the morning only, and Belfast in the afternoon.

Flights from airports in Essex and Bedfordshire cancelled because of a volcanic ash cloud over Ireland and the Outer Hebrides have returned to normal.

EU transport ministers have agreed measures they say will help prevent further disruption to air travel as a result of volcanic ash.

The measures include speeding up current plans to integrate Europe's air space, creating a "single European regulator for a single European sky".

Airspace over Scotland and Northern Ireland will be closed from 0700 BST on Wednesday due to volcanic ash, the Civil Aviation Authority has said.

It warned airports in the north-west of England and North Wales could also be affected as the cloud moved south.

It follows flight disruptions in the Irish Republic, Northern Ireland and Scotland's Hebrides on Tuesday.

03/05/10 - United and Continental Airlines to merge

US-based United Airlines and Continental Airlines have agreed a deal to merge, creating the world's biggest carrier.

The loss-making companies said they expected the deal, worth $3.2bn (£2.1bn), to deliver savings of more than $1bn a year.

The combined group will be named United Airlines.

But new branding will combine the current Continental colours with the United Airlines name. ukimports.org
