22/06/10 - Budget: Osborne's 'tough' package puts VAT up to 20%

- Courtesy of The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk)

Chancellor George Osborne increased VAT from 17.5% to 20% and cut welfare spending as he moved "decisively" to tackle Britain's record debts.

Child benefit and public sector pay will be frozen and 25% cut from public service spending - but alcohol, tobacco and fuel will escape tax hikes.

Unveiling his first Budget to MPs, Mr Osborne said "tough but fair" action on debt was "unavoidable". ukimports.org

A fire which broke out at a scrapyard near Heathrow Airport and led to large smoke plumes has been brought under control.

Ten fire engines and 50 firefighters tackled the fire, which began in Hounslow West shortly after 1620 BST.

At its height 110 cars due to be scrapped were on fire, along with an old diesel tank. The flames threatened to ignite gas cylinders at the site.

The fire was under control by about 1910 BST.

The current five-day strike by British Airways cabin crew has entered its final day, but a third wave of walkouts is due to start again from Saturday.

With no sign of a breakthrough between BA bosses and the leaders of the Unite union, the union has also threatened to ballot for more strikes in July.

The most recent talks between the two sides ended without agreement on Tuesday.

The dispute centres on pay, staffing levels and working conditions.

Unite is also demanding that BA reinstates the travel perks of striking staff, and ends disciplinary action against others. ukimports.org
