31/07/08 - Dock chemical store plan rejected
- Courtesy of The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk)Plans to store 2,500 tonnes of a potentially hazardous chemical at a dockyard in Kent have been rejected.
Arcelor Mittal Kent Wire had applied to Medway Council for approval to store ammonium nitrate at Chatham Docks.
The council decided storing the farm fertiliser, which can also be used in bombs, posed too great a risk. ukimports.org

25/07/08 - Hole forces Qantas plane to land
- Courtesy of The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk)A passenger plane en route from London to Melbourne has made an emergency landing in the Philippines after a large hole appeared in its fuselage.
Qantas Airways said its Boeing 747-400, with 346 passengers and 19 crew, diverted to Manila shortly after leaving Hong Kong and landed safely.
Engineers are investigating what caused the hole - about 2.5m to 3m in diameter - that led to cabin pressure problems.
An airport official said passengers looked scared and some were sick.
Airport authority spokesman Octavio Lina said part of the flooring near the affected section gave way, exposing some of the cargo below, and part of the ceiling also collapsed. ukimports.org
25/07/08 - Fire crews tackle warehouse blaze
- Courtesy of The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk)Firefighters are damping down after a large blaze broke out at a warehouse.
Ten fire appliances and about 70 firefighters attended the scene at Asfordby Storage and Haulage in Saxby Road, Melton Mowbray during the night.
An aerial ladder is still being used to pour two jets of water on the fire and firefighters have also been working to cool down an acetylene cylinder.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said no-one was injured in the blaze and the area had been evacuated. ukimports.org
23/07/08 - Rail upgrade for expanding port

The Suffolk container port, already the UK's largest, is to double in size after expansion plans are completed in two years' time.
The Felixstowe Branch Line will have a double track to allow for the extra freight coming in and out of port.
The port said the resulting extra trains will take "hundreds of thousands of vehicles off the region's roads". ukimports.org
23/07/08 - New freight rail link under way

The £7.9m project involves reopening a disused stretch of railway between Olive Mount and Edge Lane junctions.
The line, about a quarter of a mile long, has been closed for 20 years.
According to Neil Scales from Merseytravel, the new freight line will help reduce the number of lorries using the local road network.
The scheme is due to be completed by the end of the year. ukimports.org

Now the supersonic jet has been replaced on the roundabout at the airport entrance by a model of the world's largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380. ukimports.org
21/07/08 - Government will decide on runway

Communities and Local Government (CLG) Secretary Hazel Blears has called in operator BAA's expansion plan.
A CLG spokesman said the step was taken due to the scale of the proposal.
Campaign group CO2, comprising councils opposing the new runway, said the BAA plans would almost triple annual passenger numbers to 70 million. ukimports.org

With the ability to extend over 22 containers across, the 'ultra post-Panamax' quayside gantry cranes are amongst the largest in the world. With twin-lift capability and heavy lift capacity of 85 tonnes, they take the total number of quayside cranes serving the Port to 29. ukimports.org
