Due to forecast poor weather, the vessel berthed at Landguard Terminal, by the viewing point, but is due to be moved to Trinity Terminal early next week, when the cranes will be taken ashore. 29/02/08 - Protest over airports expansion

- Courtesy of The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk)

Climate change campaigners from flood affected areas in Yorkshire have been protesting against airport expansion.

Fifteen people blockaded the entrance to government offices on City Walk, Leeds, demonstrating over aviation growth which is linked to flooding.

The protesters, who erected tents, are residents of South Yorkshire, Hull and the Calder Valley who have all been affected by severe floods.

They were lobbying against government plans to expand the area's airports.

Penny Eastwood, one of the protesters from the Calder Valley, said: "Yorkshire is most at risk from climate change and the expansion of Doncaster or Leeds Bradford airports would have a huge increase in aviation emissions and in that sense increase the risk of flooding. ukimports.org

Plans to move flight paths in and out of major British airports away from built up areas have been launched by the firm that manages UK air traffic.

National Air Traffic Services says its plans would cut by 20% the number of people affected by noise from departing planes flying below 4,000ft (1,219m).

Airports including Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and London City may be affected.

The new flight paths could be in place by spring 2009 if the Civil Aviation Authority gives Nats the go-ahead. ukimports.org

21/02/08 - Tariff Preference: GSP - imports of clothing products from Bangladesh

- Courtesy of The BBC (www.hmrc.gov.uk)

What is it about: A European Commission Notice to Importers about potential problems with the preferential origin of the products concerned.

The European Commission informs Community operators that there is reasonable doubt as to the origin of textile products of HS chapters 61 and 62 from Bangladesh, for which the benefit of GSP preferential tariff treatment is claimed.

Within the framework of a Community administrative and investigative cooperation mission carried out in Bangladesh with the assistance of the local authorities, it was found that a significant proportion of Form A origin certificates were either false or issued on the basis of fraudulent or misleading information.

This notice replaces the Notice to importers - Textile products imported into the Community from Bangladesh under the generalised system of preferences (GSP) published in OJ C 119 of 30.4.1999, which reminded importers that they should always exercise due care over Form A origin certificates. ukimports.org

16/02/08 - Dublin flights disruption warning

- Courtesy of The BBC (www.bbc.co.uk)

There will be no overnight air traffic services at Dublin Airport, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has said.

This is due to an ongoing dispute on staffing levels between Irish air traffic controllers and the IAA.

In a statement, the IAA said it expects nine flights into and out of the airport will be affected between 2330 GMT on Saturday and 0630 GMT on Sunday.

However, there could be a knock-on effect to flights in the morning as the schedule returns to normal.

Passengers should contact their airlines before coming to the airport. ukimports.org

- Courtesy of The Southern Daily Echo (www.dailyecho.co.uk)

BUSINESS at Southampton Container Terminals is still being "significantly" affected by the aftermath of the crane accident which happened 17 days ago.

All last week the port was running at around half normal capacity as emergency inspections put other cranes out of action.

The container port, which handles the majority of the UK's trade with the Far East and is the second largest in the country, will start getting back to normal by the end of the week.

SCT managing director Campbell Mason said customers had been "relatively understanding", but added it was not possible to say how many ships had been diverted, how much business had been lost or how many containers had gone to other ports as a result of the accident. ukimports.org
